Happy New Year's Day!

I very seldom make New Year's resolutions, but this year I'm making a few. Maybe it's part of looking ahead to the next stage of my life after turning fifty. Whatever the reason, I'm planning less of the 'Lose Weight' type of resolutions and more of the 'count calories every day' type. I want to share with you three resolutions that I'm making this year.

Fiber: I am going to knit my first lace shawl. I am a bit terrified but really, what's the worst that could happen? Nobody could possibly get hurt by a knitting project (could they?) and it is only a relatively modest financial investment, SO (worst case scenario) even if I get completely frustrated and toss the entire project, it won't really be the end of the world. I bought this incredibly lovely fingering weight yarn from Fiber Optic on Etsy (No. 9 Black Coffee Kashmir, a merino-cashmere-nylon blend), and downloaded the Brandywine Shawl pattern from Ravely. Now all I have to do is DO IT.

Farm: I am going to grow, harvest and preserve more berries this year. I will net the blueberries before the birds eat them all. I am going to make it a TOP PRIORITY to weed and water the berry beds, and to pick and freeze lots of blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and currants. I will not falter, I will not go on vacation and hope for the best, and I will not ignore the encroaching weeds. I will be ever vigilant where the berries are concerned this year. A winter without blueberries in the freezer is just depressing.

Food: I'm declaring 2011 to be The Year of the Meatball. It's not like I've never heard of meatballs before, but I'm just fully realizing the immense and universal appeal and versatility of meatballs since my youngest daughter bought The Meatball Cookbook Bible for my birthday last month. I am planning to embrace the idea wholeheartedly by making a meatball recipe once a week this year -or at least until I get really bored with making meatballs, or the family is tired of eating them. But honestly, I don't think that's going to happen. Happy New Year's to All!

  2. Awesome! I had no idea that you had not knit a lace shawl before. You are such a solid knitter. I'm sure you will have fun with it.
The berries thing is exactly the kind of thing I need to be inspired to do- mostly just weeding my garden and keeping it nice.
I looking forward to hearing about how many different kinds of meatballs you can come up with!
