The Silence of the Swallows

It is said that here in the Puget Sound area we have two seasons: August and the rest of the year. I agree that we only have two seasons, but I believe the seasons are divided by when the barn swallows are living here, zipping in and out of the barn windows, and when they are not. Today, was the day I have been dreading for weeks, the morning when I go out to do chores and am met with The Silence of the Swallows. They are gone for now, until their long awaited return sometime early next May, and their absence is the melancholic herald of the ever darkening days of approaching winter.
